Product Review: Jacksons Sable Retractable Brush

The blog Billie’s Craft Room has done a very flattering review of our Jackson’s Sable Retractable Brush and I wanted to share!

She recommends the brush because it is lightweight, has a tight fitting cap, is a good quality brush with a good point, has an air hole in the cap to let out any dampness, and is excellent value for money. She says “This is a truly excellent brush, which is a joy to use.”

It is great to hear such positive feedback about one of our own brand products. Thanks Billie!

Note: we had a rush on these brushes for Christmas and are currently out of stock. We are expecting to have them again in late February. Thank you in advance for your patience. :-)

The Ready to Paint book series is designed for those who want to learn to paint but cannot rely on their drawing skills. Re-usable A3 (42 x 29.5cm; 16½ x 11¾in) outlines of paintings are provided to pull out from the centre of the book. Clear instructions and step-by-step photographs show how to transfer the outlines onto paper and then how to create beautiful watercolour, acrylic or oil paintings, although the tracings could of course be used as the starting point for painting in any media.

This book series has been very popular- it shows just how many people want to get right to the fun part and enjoy the pleasure of the paint while skipping past the drawing step which for many people is the frustrating bit. This new concept bridges the gap between painting by numbers and conventional art instruction books.

Art Tips

Art Tips
Some recent tips we have shared on our Facebook Page:

Tip for sketchbooks: if outdoors use an elastic band, paperclip or similar to stop pages flapping in the breeze.

To get straight lines in paint try brushruling. Steady a ruler with one long side on the surface and one tilted up in the air with your fingers curled under it. Run your paintbrush ferrule along the edge.

Shadows do not have to be plain grey. Try chromatic greys in complimentary colours to the object. A lemon could have a violet-grey shadow.

If you find your work too fiddly and tight then as you progress through the painting from large brushes to smaller brushes, try staying with the large brushes for longer and only using the smallest brushes at the very last.

Trees For Life update

Jackson’s Watercolour Sets towards planting trees. We have received an update on the number of trees planted: 301. Fantastic! Thanks to everyone who bought a set. Well done!

Jacksons Eco Paper Blocks

Jacksons Eco Paper now comes in blocks!

Jackson’s 140lb 100% cotton Eco paper is internally & externally gelatine sized and handmade in India. It is now available in 20 sheet blocks of pre-stretched paper that is glued on all four sides.

Introductory offer: 20% off until Dec. 1st. (click on link to go to offer)

The blocks come in three sizes. If you haven’t used a block of paper before: after the watercolour painting has dried you run a blunt knife around the edge from the inside, starting from the opening, to remove it. Then the next sheet is ready to paint on. Having the paper ready to paint on is handy especially for painting en plein aire.

The machinery normally used to make paper uses alot of energy, turning paper pulp into a giant roll of perfectly dry paper in barely a minute. Our handmade papers however are made from recycled cotton, they are individually set into the moulds and then dried slowly in the Indian sun. The water used in the production is then run off to irrigate the field of the neighbouring factory.
