Sennelier Reformulate the Artists Watercolour

Sennelier Artists Watercolour is a honey-based watercolour, using honey not only as a preservative but also to give incomparable brilliance and smoothness to the paint. Always striving for excellence, Sennelier has reworked its watercolour formula increasing the amount of honey in the paint to reinforce the longevity of the colours, their radiance and luminosity.

The New Range of Artist Watercolours from Sennelier

Sennelier Artists Watercolours are made in France using a centuries-old traditional process to give the artist the best possible control over luminous colour. Their colour range is based on the palette of the Impressionist painters who drew their inspiration from nature and set out to reproduce natural light. The watercolour technique offered them spontaneity, lightness of touch, fluidity and transparency allowing a quick translation of a particular light, vibration or shape.

We have the new formula watercolours in stock now at Jackson’s. In addition to the half pan and 10ml sizes, we now also stock the full pan and 21ml sizes. Our prices are up to 25% off the RRP on singles and sets.

Winsor & Newton Oilbars

Winsor & Newton Oilbars

Winsor & Newton are reintroducing their Artists’ Oilbar. The Winsor & Newton Artists’ Oilbar is a unique medium because it provides artists with a buttery consistency and richness of oil colour together with the freedom and directness of pastels or charcoal. The 50 rich colours are superb for drawing on canvas and can be mixed with tube oil colour and mediums.

The Oilbar range is formulated with pigment, linseed or safflower oil and wax. The colourless Oilbar is the equivalent of linseed oil in traditional oil colour, and is mostly used for blending and glazing colours directly on the canvas. It serves as a medium in solid form. Oilbar can be used with both traditional oil colour and alkyd colour. Due to the wax content thick Oilbar films are not recommended underneath thin oil films. Doing so would contravene the ‘fat over lean’ rule. Once on the canvas, the colours will become touch-dry in 2 to 7 days.

Just peel or scape off the skin of dried oil paint that has formed on the exposed end of the stick of oil colour and begin painting or drawing straight away!

Lapis Lazuli for Daniel Smith PrimaTek colours

Lapis Lazuli for Daniel Smith PrimaTek colours

Here is what Daniel Smith have to say about their DANIEL SMITH PrimaTek Watercolors:

“Our exclusive PrimaTek colors are unique paints made with pure, authentic mineral pigments that are mined directly from the earth and each one has a story. These colors have captured the imagination of artists for hundreds or even thousands of years. Their diversity is amazing, see the following for details about some of our favorite shades.

Our Minnesota Pipestone is the real thing. There is a national monument at Pipestone Minnesota where the stone is quarried in small amounts and made into pipes and other objects by native carvers. We purchased some of this mineral and converted it into pigment through our proprietary slow grinding process. Minnesota Pipestone has intriguing layers of granular texture. Radiant pink overtones accentuate an underlying golden glow that adds a new dimension to artwork.

Vivianite, named after the English mineralogist F.G.Vivian, is a rare mineral of secondary origin that exhibits an intense dark blue masstone with a slight reddish blue undertone. It has been identified in medieval paintings in Germany and in English medieval plychromy. The school of Cologne used it to depict skies in the 13th and 14th century.

Lapis Lazuli has been prized for its beauty, its mystical and healing properties, and its perfection as a pigment. Ancient civilizations believed that the veins of glittering pyrite found in the Lapis were actual gold, driving up its value. The stone’s expense today, as in the ancient world, results from its hardness, which makes extraction difficult.

Sleeping Beauty Turquoise, a unique and vibrant blue; it comes from Sleeping Beauty Mountain in Arizona. Lightfast and permanent, with none of the transient color fade that plagues most turquoise, this is truly an extraordinary color. As a mineral, turquoise has a unique molecular structure. In watercolor, its porous nature encourages interaction with other pigments and produces granular washes like no other paint. From the very first test, artists feel its powers. Juicy washes flow easily from the brush, while drybrush work has the intense texture found only in a mineral pigment. Washed alongside a warm, staining pigment, it is almost three-dimensional.”

With over 200 colours, the sheer range of possibilities these paints offer is endless and unparalleled in the industry. The amazing selection spans the spectrum from the historical to the boldest colours modern technology has to offer. Daniel Smith were the first to use quinacridone pigments for artists paint, they are pioneers! A unique feature of Daniel Smith watercolours are the “PrimaTek” range of colours which are made with authentic mineral pigments. They also do interference and duo-tone colours.

Until we get it on our website the transparency and pigment information is available on the Daniel Smith website.

Here is what they say on the Daniel Smith website:

“DANIEL SMITH currently offers 247 different watercolors, with more in the works every year. The sheer range of possibility they offer is endless and unparalleled in the industry. Our amazing selection spans the spectrum from the historical, to our natural earth and PrimaTek colors, to our Quinacridones, the brightest and boldest colors modern technology has to offer.

Dan Smith started his business in 1976, dedicated to bringing the highest quality inks to the print-artist community. In 1993, Dan set out to create a line of watercolors with one goal in mind: to bring the watercolor artist the very best product available. His dream came to fruition with the introduction of a hugely innovative collection of 27 paints that just happened to change the world of watercolors forever. Our pigments may come from every continent except Antarctica but our paints are manufactured in Seattle, Washington.

The DANIEL SMITH paint making lab is neither big nor impersonal. It is a world of machinery and color, where the air smells of linseed oil, and everyone’s clothes are splattered with paint. The manufacturing R&D lab is the soul of the company, a place where ideas are shared, artist’s voices are heard, and new DANIEL SMITH colors are brought to life by a talented and dedicated production team. Artisans making paint for artists, they have your complete satisfaction in mind.

Each year more of our chemist’s inventive creations are introduced. Early on, DANIEL SMITH Inc. was the first to offer Quinacridone pigments in artists’ paints. These fantastic, powerful colors, originally created for the auto industry, gave artists new and vibrant choices perfect for glazing. A buying frenzy ensued, and since then, these colors have been copied by other paint manufacturers. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

Derwent Pastel Pencils new softer formula

Derwent have created a new softer formula in the 72 colours of their pastel pencil range.

Derwent’s new Pastel Pencil range has a contemporary new look, softer texture and rejuvenated range of colours. The new softer texture means improved performance. The pencil glides across the surface of the paper, transferring the colour with a velvety touch that produces a smooth and full bodied
powdery finish.

It is now easy to move colour around your drawing, especially with the help of a paper stump if you want to keep your fingers clean! The range of Pastel Pencils has been reduced from 90 shades to a more balanced
selection of 72. The vibrant and intense colours blend easily to create an infinite number of hues and tints.

The new pencils sharpen much more easily so you can enjoy the best of both worlds; the beauty of pastels with the precision of a pencil. The barrel coating on the pencils uses our environmentally friendly water-based paint technology.

Click here for the new pastel pencils available singly and in sets on the Jackson’s Art website.

Derwent leaflet with tips for using the pastel pencils.

Sharpening: Pastel pencils are more delicate than normal pencils, so when sharpening them be sure to take care. Keep the pencil in a straight line. Do not insert the pencil at an angle or the point will be subjected to unnecessary pressure and may break. Alternatively you can use a craft knife to sharpen your pastel pencil. Always ensure your blade or sharpener is sharp, pastel by its very nature causes a blade to blunt more quickly than normal pencils.

New Saunders Waterford HIGH WHITE watercolour paper

Saunders Waterford HIGH WHITE

Until quite recently you couldn’t get artists’ quality papers that were very white because the “optical brighteners” added to the pulp made the paper not archival.  It was the price watercolour artists paid: to have artists’ quality paper it couldn’t be bright white. Something must have been discovered recently because suddenly the highest quality papers have a “bright white” version.

The superb artists’ grade paper from Saunders Waterford is now available in bright white, along with their normal natural creamy white paper. This high quality paper has a watermark in the corner for authenticity and 4 deckle edges which are visually beautiful and perfect for float framing.

Artists’ grade watercolour paper is archival which means it will not discolour or fall apart over time and is made of 100% cotton rag.  This paper is much more durable than lower grades of paper because it is gelatine surface sized and it is mould made both of which mean it can take scrubbing of the surface without falling apart.  Saunders Waterford paper is endorsed by the Royal Watercolour Society.

Saunders Waterford High White Watercolour Paper

Saunders Waterford High White Watercolour Papers, in a range of surface textures

Review of the new paper by acclaimed artist Ann Blockley:

“ A major thumbs up for the new white Waterford paper! My paintings now sparkle with life and vitality as the clean, bright white paper can now glow through the watercolour untainted by the yellowy dye of the ‘old style’ traditional paper. My watercolours now have the freshness that you get from using Bockingford with the complex layering and textures that only Waterford can achieve. I have used masking fluid. I have washed out, scrubbed, layered washes, salted, cling-filmed, played around with mixed media and tested the new version of paper with my entire repertoire of techniques and am delighted with the results. The white surface really helps to achieve the translucent, clean colour that is especially useful for flower painting and adds a contemporary twist to my other subjects. This paper is an essential surface for the serious watercolour artist.” – Ann Blockley
