We attended the Private View of A Celebration of Creative Art
the UK Coloured Pencil Society’s 10th Annual Open Exhibition on Sunday evening in Westminster. The large exhibition of work by members of the society in a variety of styles was grouped mostly by subject and contained some impressive work. We both particularly liked Amber Halsall’s Going, Going, Gone a botanical treatment of a tree trunk with three stages of beautifully peeling bark.

There was also a “have a go” area for trying some drawing, reproduction prints for sale and in a silent auction, books and materials for sale, and a display of pencils and the company history from Faber-Castell a sponsor of the exhibition. During the rest of the exhibition there will be a large selection of workshops from well-known artists. The exhibition and workshops continue until October 1st.

Here are two quick snaps we took:

A Celebration of Creative Art exhibition

Artists’ Oil Colour is unmatched for its purity, quality and reliability – a success which is reflected in its world-wide reputation amongst professional artists. It has 120 colours in the range, offering the widest spectrum of all the Winsor & Newton oil ranges.

Griffin Fast Drying Oil Colour offers the excellent advantage of faster drying times compared to traditional oil colours. This means that the traditional oil techniques of both impasto and glazing can be done in considerably less time and a painting can be completed in a single session.
The full range of 50 colours are ideal for working outdoors, and greater transparency means increased depth and clarity for glazes.

Artisan Water Mixable Oil Colour has been specifically developed to appear and work just like conventional oil colour.
The key difference between Artisan and conventional oils is its ability to thin and clean up with water. Hazardous solvents are not necessary for Artisan and artists can enjoy a safer painting environment, making it ideal for artists who share a work space, schools or painting at home.
The Artisan range consists of 40 colours and has a dedicated range of 11 Artisan solvents, oils, mediums and varnishes, allowing you to achieve all oil painting techniques.

Winton is a traditional range of oil colours, made from moderately priced pigments, formulated for student and amateur artists or more accomplished painters requiring large volumes of colour within moderate cost limits.

Winsor & Newton are reintroducing their Artists’ Oilbar. The Winsor & Newton Artists’ Oilbar is a unique medium because it provides artists with a buttery consistency and richness of oil colour together with the freedom and directness of pastels or charcoal. The 50 rich colours are superb for drawing on canvas and can be mixed with tube oil colour and mediums.

The Oilbar range is formulated with pigment, linseed or safflower oil and wax. The colourless Oilbar is the equivalent of linseed oil in traditional oil colour, and is mostly used for blending and glazing colours directly on the canvas. It serves as a medium in solid form. Oilbar can be used with both traditional oil colour and alkyd colour. Due to the wax content thick Oilbar films are not recommended underneath thin oil films. Doing so would contravene the ‘fat over lean’ rule. Once on the canvas, the colours will become touch-dry in 2 to 7 days.

Just peel or scape off the skin of dried oil paint that has formed on the exposed end of the stick of oil colour and begin painting or drawing straight away!

The UK’s leading source of inspiration for textile arts and crafts –
“learn, create, be happy”.
www.colouricious.com

Jamie Malden in Wet Studio

Recent government research revealed that between 5-6 million or 1 in 6 people (17% of population) regularly participate in visual arts, textile arts and crafts to create and express themselves in a simple, purposeful way. It seems that arts and crafts are an increasingly effective antidote for millions to living in such a chaotic, uncertain world and one so dominated by economics, shopping, consumerism and technology.

One woman with an unswerving, lifelong passion for all types of crafts and especially textile art, Jamie Malden, founder of Colouricious, believes that for many people real happiness is derived from ‘being creative, making things yourself, trying something new’. Academics have claimed the dominance of economics over culture is being reversed as the ‘Creative Class’ emerges where innovation and creativity are a more effective way to drive our economy, business, cities, communities and lifestyles.

Jamie is on a mission and knows that there is ‘creative spirit’ in everyone and believes greater happiness in life is derived from nurturing this fundamental need in us all. She plans to share and pass on the joys of one creative route, that of textile art and crafts, with as many people as possible. Colouricious.com is the vehicle she has created in order to achieve this.

In 2008 Jamie invested her own savings, turned her passion into a new career and started Colouricious, a growing and popular multi-media source of all things textile art, specifically created to share knowledge, inspire and teach more people how to create their own textile art at home.

Working alongside many of the UK’s leading textile artists, Jamie and Colouricious try to bring a refreshing, accessible and comprehensive range of products to ignite creativity and enhance all levels of textile arts and craft skills.

She created a production company and turned her house into a film studio in order to make professional, broadcast quality programmes offering complete step by step guides. “When I looked, there wasn’t much out there in terms of easy to follow guidance made professionally and I thought film was the most visual, best medium to show people the beautiful, inspiring things we can all create at home.”

In addition to their website Colouricious also have a blog.
