Romantic Vision video
Romantic Vision is an intimate portrait of British painter Hugo Grenville. Based on a series of interviews, observational filmmaking and abstract photography, we see him at work in his studio in Dalston and hear about the joys and frustrations of life as a painter.
The film attempts to capture the particular mood, sensuality and beauty of Hugo’s studio, which, in contrast to the outside world, has a dream-like, meditative and romantic feel.
Hugo Grenville will be running his 2011 Summer School in September at his new studio at St James’ Farm in Suffolk. For more information please visit www.hugogrenville.com

An example is this DVD:

Here’s the story:
Winchcome Pottery was set up by Michael Cardew and sold to Ray Finch and Mike Finch who made Winchcome pottery what it is today by being consistent and in control of the clay.
You will learn how they do it or just enjoy watching, step by step. This DVD takes you through all of the techniques including kneading, Folding, Pugmills, Centering, secondary centering, throwing off the lump, egg cups, bowls, cyclinders, wedging, corrections, galleries and so much more.
Winchcombe Pottery was established in 1926, on the site of a pottery dating back to the early 1800 s making Winchcombe Pottery one of the longest running craft potteries in England. In 1939 Ray Finch took over Winchcombe Pottery from Michael Cardew.

* Easily learn new skills and hone your existing method.
* First Class reviews in Ceramic and Pottery magazines.

Artsbowl – a creative courses hub
Artsbowl.com is a new online creative courses hub where creative individuals can promote or find art classes, workshops and courses, share their experiences of participating in arts courses and belong to a creative learning community.
The Artsbowl website artsbowl.com is the brainchild of Daniel Lingham, a sculptor with an entrepreneurial flair. Daniel realised there was a need for an online platform where small independent course providers and the more established arts organisations could promote their creative courses to far greater effect than simply having their own individual website – the idea came about after many hours were spent trying to promote his own stone sculpting workshops.
Artsbowl is a platform for anyone providing art classes, creative courses or arts based workshops to list their activities, share experiences and tips, create blogs and message others. It also provides opportunities for people attending the amazing variety of classes to share and discuss the workshops or classes they have been on.
Creative courses on Artsbowl come in a variety of forms, ranging from painting to pottery, sculpting, jewellery, creative writing and much more. Artsbowl’s ethos is to embrace creative learning in all of these fields and aims to attract a large community of creative individuals and organisations.
Artsbowl operates on an international scale. “We hope that artsbowl will enable people of all ages and abilities from around the world to find a creative outlet that is just right for them” says Daniel. “People look for creative activities for various reasons, ranging from personal enrichment, to searching for an alternative career path. You can find classes that meet any of these needs on artsbowl” he added.
You will also find all sorts of interesting blogs and articles on a range of topics related to creativity on the site. If you are passionate about your artistic pursuits, you are more than welcome to add your own blogs or comments on artsbowl.

Derwent Pastel Pencils Workshop and Demonstrations
Demonstrations and Workshops with the New Derwent Pastel Pencils at The Cumberland Pencil Museum, Keswick.
Professional pencil artist, Jenny Hill, has created a Derwent workshop using the new Derwent Pastel Pencils. Nothing beats the colourful brilliance of pastels but they’re not the easiest medium to use. However you can now enjoy all the beauty of pastel in a convenient, non-messy form. Derwent woodcased pastel pencils have a soft, powdery texture which produces a velvety smooth finish, ideal for mixing and blending. And because they’re pencils, they’re clean and easy to control – although you may not be able to resist the occasional smudge with your finger!
Derwent was delighted to announce the re-launch of its pastel pencil range in January 2010, combining a contemporary new look and softer texture with a rejuvenated range of colours.
The new softer texture means improved performance. The pencil glides across the surface of the paper, transferring the colour with a velvety touch that produces a smooth and full bodied powdery finish. It is now easy to move colour around your drawing, especially with the help of a paper stump if you want to keep your fingers clean! The vibrant and intense colours blend easily to create an infinite number of hues and tints.
May 18th and 19th 2010 – Pastel Pencils with Jenny Hill
FREE demonstration events. The demonstration allows students to explore and experiment with a variety of techniques using the new pastel pencils. Demonstrations start at 10.00. Please collect a ticket from reception which entitles you to one hour’s free tuition. The last demonstration of the day starts at 15.00 and finishes at 16.00.
May 20th 2010 – Tuition Workshop – Creative Textures in Pastel with Jenny Hill
This workshop is suitable for beginners and intermediate levels, who wish to learn the basics in pastel pencils. Jenny will spend the whole day guiding you through pastel papers, coloured backgrounds, pencil block work, and gradually adding in quick techniques to create a picture.
Jenny’s favourite subjects are flowers, animals and British birds and she will explain layering, blending, and many other pastel techniques, helping you to produce your own couple of pieces of work throughout the day.
Workshops run between 10.30am – 4.30pm. £40 per person per workshop. A 10% discount is offered for any two or more workshops booked at any one time.
All materials for the day’s tuition are included in the cost of the workshop. Paper, pencils, fixing spray, brushes etc.., will all be provided per person. You will be working from a tin of 24 pencils, which will give you the opportunity to experiment with light, tone, and texture of the pencils.
For more information and to book your place on the workshop please call the Pencil Museum on 017687 73626.

Studio Hugo Grenville
Studio Hugo Grenville is in The Chocolate Factory, the artist’s studio complex next door to us here in East London. If you visit him come by and see us!
For the past ten years, Studio Hugo Grenville has successfully run courses designed to help artists of all levels to break barriers and move forward within their studio practice. Highly regarded as a colourist painter in the Romantic tradition, drawing on such influences as Bonnard and Matisse, Hugo Grenville has built a reputation as an excellent tutor to students of all ages and backgrounds, with an ability to maintain sensitivity to individual interests and passions. There is an emphasis on understanding what it means to paint tonally, experiment with visual language, and re-interpret colour with relation to subject matter. In 2010 Hugo will be running 3 courses from his North London studio, housed in a converted former chocolate factory, with artists, ceramicists and designers working in the adjacent spaces. The large studio is light and airy, and well equipped with an extensive selection of monographs and exhibition catalogues, easels, and objects that make for fascinating subject matter.
Later on in the year Studio Hugo Grenville decamps to the Olhao Art School, Portugal. The art school is a converted townhouse, with studio spaces surrounding a cobble-stone courtyard. Mediterranean seascapes, Portuguese fishing markets and beautiful rustic coloured houses line the nearby streets; there is no end to the inspiration that this setting offers! It is testament to his strengths as a teacher that many students of Studio Hugo Grenville return year upon year to learn more about the painting process, and look back on their time in his company as ‘inspirational , challenging and really helped one to make big steps forward’ (a student of the ‘Understanding Colour ‘course, 2009)
