This recipe on the Empty Easel website is similar to one of the oil painting mediums I use, the one I use most often. A bit dripped into the colour on the palette mixes in to thin it to a better painting consistency and it seems to even out the drying times of all the different pigments, so they end up drying at the same rate. It gives a glossy finish. Just a bit works well except when I use it on the absorbent gesso panels, which absorbs a lot of the medium, so I have to use a bit more.
It seems like the surface is strong and flexible (so less cracking later) and since that is how stand oil is described I am confident that it is a good structure.
I have a jam jar marked with divisions on the side with a marker. I pour in 2 parts turpentine and 1 part stand oil. I let the two layers sit overnight and then give it a tip over once or twice and it is ready to use.
I use Roberson’s Rectified Turpentine and Roberson’s Stand Oil.
